Found this in a cookbook made by my family. Remembered I loved it when I made it and thought I'd share!
Roman Apple cake
sift together 1 1/2 c. sugar, 2 tsp baking powder, 3/4 tsp salt, 2 1/4 c. flour 1 1/2 tsp soda. Add 3/4 c. shortening and mix as you would for biscuits. Add 3/4 cup milk and 2 beaten eggs, then 1 tsp vanilla.
Fold in 3 or 4 medium size apples, chopped fine. Put mix into a greased pan, then top with a mixture of: 3 Tbsp melted butter, 3/4 cup chopped nuts, 3 Tbsp. flour, 2 Tbsp. cinnamon, and 3/4 c. brown sugar.
Stir mixture until crumbly and pour over cake batter. Bake about 1 hour at 350.

That sounds like a great Fall dessert. Anything apple sounds like a good Fall dessert to me, though! LOL!

I took it to a pot-luck breakfast once. It's a decent coffee-cake type thing too.
