TOAST OF NEW YORK CARRIES BANNER FOR ENGLAND IN BELMONT DERBY
by Press Release | 07.02.2014 | 10:15am
Toast Of New York will bid to live up to his name on Saturday when he lines up for the Grade 1 Belmont Derby at Belmont Park in New York.
Jamie Osborne’s charge was last seen when triumphing for owner Michael Buckley in the Group 2 UAE Derby at Meydan on Dubai World Cup night, and he has been primed for this raid on a second overseas Derby of the year.
The son of Thewayyouare is the current Team British Racing Champion, and will be bidding to add further glory to his record in the 1m1f turf race at the historic Belmont Park racetrack in New York. Should he be successful, he will become the first winner of the race, run until this year as the Jamaica Handicap, to be trained in Britain since Western Aristocrat won in 2011 for Jeremy Noseda.
Osborne commented: “Toast Of New York has been working really well, he is going into the race in the form of his life and we’re hopeful and looking forward to a big run on Saturday.”
“I’m delighted that Toast Of New York is a part of Team British Racing; it is a great way to highlight British trained runners and their connections racing overseas and the whole Toast of New York team and I are proud to be a part of it.”
Michael Buckley, owner of Toast Of New York commented: ‘‘It’s thrilling to own a lovely colt such as Toast Of New York, and it is a happy coincidence that after I named him after the Cary Grant movie, he is good enough to contest a race in the State which gave him his name.”
Monmouth Park
“If we are lucky enough to win the Belmont Derby, we might consider going for the Pacific Classic at Del Mar towards the end of August. The ultimate goal, if we think we could be competitive, would be the Dubai World Cup next year.”
“We are delighted to be part of Team British Racing and to do our part to promote British racing with our runners overseas. We look forward to representing Team British Racing this weekend at Belmont and in the future on Toast Of New York’s international campaign.”
A day later, Team British Racing’s most travelled globe-trotter Side Glance will be lining up in the Grade 1 United Nations Handicap, run at Monmouth in New Jersey. Already a Group 1 winner in Australia for owners Pearl Bloodstock and trainer Andrew Balding, Side Glance has represented Team British Racing in Dubai and Singapore this year.
Trainer Andrew Balding commented: “Side Glance is in good form and is already in Monmouth, we are waiting to see his draw on Thursday in the United Nations, but he is very well in himself. Due to the location of Britain it makes the world a very small and accessible place and we have enjoyed campaigning Side Glance internationally and more latterly as part of Team British Racing. There is definitely a team spirit when we go abroad, if we aren’t lucky enough to win we always want someone else from Britain to.”
